Thanks so much for this invitation. I am delighted to answer any questions from students and teachers.
ReplyDeleteHere are some of my questions for you:
1. Before you read Daughter of War, had you been aware of the Armenian genocide?
2. Do you enjoy writing? What do you write?
3. Is your reading taste similar to your writing taste?
Before reading Daughter of War I was not at all aware of the Armenian genocide or the war that occured between the Turks and the the Armenians. This novel opened my eyes to the reality of war. As a Canadian, I have heard about war through the news and I have seen films about war, but I have never actually thought about war. Your novel really made me think and made me appreciate the freedom I have as a Canadian.
ReplyDeleteAs for my writing, I do not write very much. I do enjoy writing song lyrics and creating melodies on my piano.
Because I write music, my songs are greatly reflected on the artist and songs that I listen to. I write my own lyrics based on my own experiences.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my thoughts to you. I am looking forward to meeting you in May.

ReplyDeleteIt was an entertaining book, not the kind i typically read, but none the less a good book. I didn't really like reading the words "after river" repeatedly in the book it got mildley irretating. I realized it was it was important the first few times it was said. The Boyer River relation wasn't too much of a shock, it was obviouse that they had something going on but i didn't know how intense it was. The Mr. Ryan incident was a given, it was very abviouse he was a creep from the beginning. Over all a reall ygood book and nice read.
Hey Sarah,
ReplyDeleteThat's great that you write song lyrics. Do you also write poetry? Thanks for your kind words about Daughter of War. We're fortunate to live in Canada. For me, writing about other times and places always makes me grateful for what I have.
Dear Ms. Skrypuch,
ReplyDeleteI apologize that I did not respond right away to your question. I didn't know that you had replied to my comments.
My mother told me that she "googled" my name for something and that my blog for "Daughter of War" was one of the first links posted.
Today I just returned from a school trip with my school's music department to New York City - it was a great experience. A couple minutes ago she told me that you had responded to my comments and so I ran downstairs to check it out.
As for your question, I guess I do write poetry in a way. When I am inspired by something that has just happened to me (or if I simply feel like writing a song for the sake just for the fun of it).
I get out my composition book and start jotting down lyrics. Usually I write down the first things that come to mind. Most of the time I try to make the last words of each phrase rhyme.
Sometimes, if the song is really important to me or if I see the potential of a good tune, I will think up a melody and then later on I will sit at the piano and bash out some good chords.
If I choose not to make it into a song, it could possibly just be considered a poem.
The reason I brought up my trip to New York City earlier is that one of the first places we visited was the Apollo Theatre. Every Wednesday night is "Amateur Night" and so anyone can audition to appear in the show each week. The day we attended the show the was a poet - his name is ESSENCE LAMONTE. His choice of words was extremely powerful and inspiration to me.
When you asked me if I also write poetry that reminded me of him. And then I thought about my own compositions and the lyrics that I had not made into songs. Now I feel that it is okay to leave the lyrics as they are - but now I can call them poems.
Sorry for the long-winded message.
I cannot wait for May!
