Little Brother by Cory Doctorow

After his city is attacked, Marcus is wrongfully taken into custody by Homeland Security. When he’s released, one of his friends is missing, his rights are gone and his city has become a police state. The only computer the government isn’t watching is his Xbox....

Discussion questions:

How realistic do you think Marcus' situation was?

Coult this "Police State" ever really happen in Canada or the United States - in these democracies? Why/Why not?

Did you ever consider that Van or Ange might actually be traitors to Marcus? What about Masha or Zeb?

Did you think this was a well-written novel? Why/Why not?

What did you think of the plot? If you have read Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell do you see any similarities between the two novels?

Do you think the Omar Khahr arrest had anything to do with the theme for this book?

  1. I really enjoyed this book. I think it was well-written. I gave this book to a boy who had not read in quite a while and he just loved it. All you techies will want to read this!

  2. This was an amazing book. It felt like I was reading a mini-revolution. All the references to computers, LARPing(haha) and other techy stuff really drew my in. I really thought that Ange was bad news. I think the book would have been better without the romance, I felt it took away from his mission. It seemed that in certain parts of the book he had completely forgotton about his friend and that the emotion when he saved his friend were brushed aside for his girlfriend. Totally one of my faves though!

  4. I liked this book once I was about halfway through it. The beginning is a little comfusing with all of the tech stuff, but it's actually pretty cool. I mean, it's really cool how Marcus (aka M1k3y or W1n5t0n) waged a technology war against the Department of Homeland Security. Who has that kind of guts? Seriously, that was totally brave and maybe a little dumb but the fact that it was successful makes it brilliant! =) I liked this book a lot.
